Sweden Boosts Financial Incentives to $34,000 for Immigrants Leaving the Country

Stockholm: Sweden intends to raise benefits for immigrants who decide to leave the nation to a maximum of $34,000. The right-wing government announced this action to solve issues with integrating newcomers.

Although Sweden had a reputation for having strict humanitarian laws for a long time it has had trouble integrating newcomers. Immigrants who willingly return to their native countries may be eligible to receive up to 350,000 Swedish kronor starting in 2026. The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats are in favor of a new immigration policy that includes this modification.

At the moment immigrants are eligible to receive a maximum of 40,000 kronor per family or up to 10,000 kronor for each adult and 5,000 kronor for each child. The government anticipates that by raising the sum, more people will accept the offer. Only one recipient of the grant last year.

Only a small number of people use the grant according to Ludvig Aspling of the Sweden Democrats. Higher compensation in his opinion, might entice more immigrants to return home, particularly those who are having financial difficulties.

A recent government study however, recommended against making a big increase, stating that it might not be economical and might even undermine integration efforts. Return incentives are also provided by other European nations; Denmark pays more than $15,000 per individual, while Norway, France, and Germany give less.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who takes office in 2022, has pledged to introduce strict immigration and criminal laws. It was supported by the Swedish Democrats. It is now the second largest party. Since the 1970s, Sweden has been a historic donor country to immigration and foreign aid.
