Nana Kwame Bediako, an independent presidential contender, has announced a plan to earn $50 billion by providing Ghanaian citizenship to investors of African heritage.
The plan, which is part of Bediako’s campaign manifesto, was unveiled on September 1, 2024, to attract one million Africans to contribute $50,000 apiece in exchange for Ghanaian citizenship.
Bediako, often known as “Cheddar,” outlined this method as part of his 12-point plan for Ghana. He sees a collaboration between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior to “empower this country’s immigration services and create the citizenship package to monetize Ghanaian citizenship only for Africans.”

The proposal is aimed at both diaspora Africans and people of other African states. Investors might invest in a variety of Ghanaian economic sectors, like as gold, oil, and agro-processing.
Bediako sees this endeavor as a step towards the African Union, the start of his “Project USA, United States of Africa.” He believes that this method will welcome Africans across Ghana’s borders while stimulating investment in the country.
Ghana’s passport is ranked 70th in the world, with visa-free entry to 68 places. Ghana as a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) already participates in a regional free movement protocol which could make Ghanaian citizenship more appealing to investors from outside the bloc.
Bediako views this proposition as more than just a financial plan. He sees “a borderless continent” where trade and investment may thrive, with neighboring countries embracing the project.
The candidate hinted at a “phase two,” encouraging a larger number of people of African origin to contribute, but did not disclose specifics.
Bediako, who ran for president under the “New Force Movement” banner faced obstacles. While he has received a provisional certificate from the Electoral Commission, he does not have full party registration. As a result, he intends to run as an independent candidate in the December 7, 2024 election.
As Ghana approaches its election, Bediako’s idea adds a new aspect to discussions about economic development and pan-African cooperation.
